people本身不加s的話就是集合名詞，指“人”。如果加s,就是指的是“民族，種族”的復(fù)數(shù)。people's 是“人民的”的意思，這時是集合名詞；peoples'是“民族的”的意思. 此時people是可數(shù)名詞。

people的用法

1. people表示“人”“人們”時，只用單數(shù)形式，但表示復(fù)數(shù)意義;作主語時謂語用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

People love having cats as pets. 人們喜歡把貓當(dāng)作寵物。

These people have the choice of whether to buy a house or rent one. 這些人可以選擇買房或租房。

Many people enjoy the pleasures and convenience of living in a city centre. 許多人喜歡住在市中心的樂趣和便利。

若要表示“一個人”，英語不能用 one people，可根據(jù)情況改用 one person, one man, one woman, one boy 等。

2. 表示“民族”時，為可數(shù)名詞，其前可用不定冠詞，也可有復(fù)數(shù)形式，有時甚至還可以與數(shù)詞連用。如：

We Chinese are a hardworking people. 我們中國人是勤勞的人民。

Ireland was inhabited by two peoples. 愛爾蘭居住著兩個民族。

The English-speaking peoples share a common language. 講英語的各民族擁有共同的語言。

也可與 few, many 等連用。如：

The human race is made up of many different peoples. 人類由許多不同的民族組成。

Few peoples in the world can boast (of) such an old civilization as ours. 世界上沒有幾個民族有像我國民族這樣悠久的文化。
