less than修飾不可數名詞，fewer than修飾可數名詞，均表示“少于”。但是，如果復數可數名詞不強調其一一可數，而是表示一個整體單位，一段時間或一段距離，指的是度量，則要用less than,因為度量是一個不可數的抽象概念。

1、與具體人 / 物連用時，多用fewer than, 在非正式語體中也可用less than。如：

One in ten women can cook fewer than three meals without looking at a recipe book or asking for help.

十分之一的女性在不查看食譜書或沒有幫助的情況下，連三道菜也做不出。

2、在與表示時間 / 距離 / 金額的計量名詞(days/ hours/ miles/ dollars)連用時，要用less than+ 數詞 + 計量名詞結構：
