“more?than”之后可接名詞、動名詞、動詞、數詞、形容詞、副詞等，有“不止、超過、勝過、多于、以上、很”等意思。

“More than+名詞”表示“不僅僅是”

1、He is more than a father. 他不僅僅是一位父親。

2、We need more than material wealth to build our country.建設我們國家，不僅僅需要物質財富.

“More than+數詞”表示不止

含“以上”或“不止”之意，如：

1、The job needs more than three people. 這項工作需要三人以上去做。

2、There are more than fifty workers in this workshop. 這個車間里有五十多個工人。

3、More than one person has made this suggestion. 不止一人提過這個建議。

“More than+形容詞”表示非常

等于“很”或“非?！钡囊馑?，如：

1、In doing scientific experiments, one must be more than careful with the instruments.

2、I'm afraid I've eaten more than enough. 恐怕我是吃得過多了。

more than + (that)從句表示超過

其基本意義是“超過(=over)”，但可譯成“簡直不”“遠非”. 難以，完全不能(其后通常連用情態(tài)動詞 can)

1、That is more than I can understand . 那非我所能懂的。

2、This city has a population of more than 1,000,000. 這個城市人口超過一百萬。

3、The heat there was more than he could stand. 那兒的炎熱程度是他所不能忍受的
