“hundred”一詞僅有兩種用法。首先,當(dāng)“hundred”作為名詞時(shí),需要加“s”,并且常與“of”連用,表示非確切數(shù)量,如“hundreds of students”,意為“數(shù)以百計(jì)的學(xué)生”。其次,當(dāng)“hundred”作為形容詞時(shí),則不加“s”,例如“two hundred students”,即“兩百個(gè)學(xué)生”。

“hundred”、“hundreds”以及“hundreds of”之間存在何種差異？

在習(xí)語中,“hundred”并不表示精確的數(shù)字,而是強(qiáng)調(diào)數(shù)量之多,例如：

在此句中,“hundred”所指的縣或郡是基層行政單位（subdivision of county or shire,having its own court）,大抵相當(dāng)于鄉(xiāng)或鎮(zhèn)。據(jù)Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable記載,最初可能是由“100 hides”組成一個(gè)基層行政單位,因此得名“hundred”（hide是英國(guó)昔日之地積單價(jià),相當(dāng)于60至120英畝不等）。
