the whole和all the使用位置不同，all要放在冠詞、指示代詞、物主代詞等之前，而the whole應放在這些詞之后。在復數名詞前一般用all，在單數可數名詞前一般用the whole。

在不可數名詞之前一般用all，而不用the whole（偶爾有例外：the whole time/all the time；his whole energy/all his energy等），但在物質名詞前則絕對不用the whole。

在表地點的專有名詞之前，一般用all而不用the whole，但可用the whole of。

在時間名詞（如day、week、month、year等）以及季節(jié)名詞（spring、summer、autumn、winter）之前，兩者都可用（注意冠詞的位置）。
